Wǔhàn 武漢 was formed in 1927 by merging the three cities Hànyáng 漢陽, Hànkǒu 漢口, and Wǔchāng 武昌. For a short time in the late 1930s it was the wartime capital of the Republic of China, before the government moved further west. Note that in spite of its recent formation, some historical sources use the term "Wǔhàn" to refer to the tri-city region before 1927 as well.
