Founded in Shànghǎi 上海 in the summer of 1918 by Tàixū 太虛 and a group of prominent laymen (see list below). This group was closely connected with the Patriotic Study Society 愛國學社 founded by Cài Yuánpéi 蔡元培 in 1902, and shared much membership.[1] They first published two works by Tàixū, Dàodé lùnhéng 道德論衡 (Discourse on Morality) and Léngyán shèlùn 楞嚴攝論 (Select Commentary on the Śūraṃgama Sūtra).
