Jué shè 覺社 (The "Awakening Society" or "Bodhi Society", 1918 - 1921?)[1] was an association devoted to Buddhist study and publication.

Founded in Shànghǎi 上海 in the summer of 1918 by Tàixū 太虛 and a group of prominent laymen (see list below). Dōngchū draws a link between this group and the Patriotic Academy 愛國學社 founded by Cài Yuánpéi 蔡元培 in 1902, but since the academy was closed in the wake of the Sūbào 蘇報 incident of 1903, this link may be limited to the fact that Zhāng Tàiyán 章太炎 was involved in both.[2] The Juéshè first published two works by Tàixū, Dàoxué lùnhéng 道學論衡 (Discourse on Morality) and Léngyán shèlùn 楞嚴攝論 (Select Commentary on the Śūraṃgama Sūtra).[3] These publications eventually became the seed for Awakening Society Collectania 覺社叢書, a quarterly periodical that the Society began publishing in October, 1918.
At the end of 1919, the Society's headquarters were moved from Shànghǎi to the Jìngfàn yuàn 淨梵院 on the West Lake in Hángzhōu 杭州. Along with the move, the periodical became a monthly and its name was changed to Hǎicháo yīn 海潮音, which began publishing in the first lunar month of 1920 under the editorship of Shǐ Yīrú.
The society does not appear to be referenced in print after 1921, except for the title of a reprint collection of Juéshè cóngshū articles published in 1923 as Juéshè cóngshū xuǎnběn 覺社叢書選本 (Selected Works from Juéshè cóngshū). Branch societies or other similarly names groups are cited through the 1920s and 1930s.
