This temple was originally built in 1882 (Guāngxù 光緒 8) on Māigen Street 麥根路 in 1882 (Guāngxù 光緒 8). In 1917, its abbot Kěchéng 可成, moved the temple to Ānyuǎn Street 安遠路, where the new streucture was built following the style of Jīnshān 金山 in Zhènjiāng 鎮江.
During his tenure as abbot, Zhènhuá 震華 (served from 1942 until his death in 1947) established a rigorous adherence to the precepts as part of the culture at the temple. He bolstered this by starting the Shànghǎi Buddhist Seminary 上海佛學院 the first year he was in office.
As with most temples in China, this one suffered great damage during the Cultural Revolution. It reopened in 1979, and is now fully renovated.
