Zhènjiāng 鎮江

Zhènjiāng is a city on the south bank of the Yangzi River, close to the capital of the Republic of China, Nánjīng 南京. It is an important transportation hub owing to its location on the river and on the Grand Canal, and was the capital of Jiāngsū 江蘇 province during the period of the Republic.

Important Buddhist Sites

  • Jiāngtiān Chan Temple 江天禪寺 is located on Jīn Mountain 金山, northwest of the city
  • Dìnghuì Temple 定慧寺 is located on Jiāo Mountain 焦山, northeast of the city
    • Shì Dōngchū 釋東初 taught here in the 1930s
    • The Jiāoshān Buddhist Seminary 焦山佛學院 was located on Jiāo Mountain 焦山 in the 1930s and 1940s
  • Lóngchāng Temple 隆昌寺 is located on Bǎohuá Mountain 寶華山, southwest of the city
  • Zhúlín Temple 竹林寺 is located here
    • The Zhúlín Buddhist Seminary 竹林佛學院 was located here in the late 1920s and 1930s
    • Fúshàn 福善 was ordained here in the early 1930s
  • The periodical 'Midstream' (Zhōngliú 中流) was published here in the late 1940s
  • Lǐ Yuányīn 李元音 lived here in the late 1910s and early 1920s
