'''Tāng Yòngtóng 湯用彤 (1893-1964)''' was an influential Chinese scholar of Buddhist history who was active primarily in the first half of the 20th century. His works are still widely consulted.

==Biography==

Tāng's family was originally from Huángméi County 黃梅縣 in Húběi [[湖北]], but his father Tāng Lín 湯霖 (a ''Jìnshì'' 進士 degree holder) was appointed a county official in Wèiyuán County 渭源縣, Gānsù [[甘肅]]. Before long, his father quit his post and began a private academy, where Tāng studied as a youth.

In the closing years of the Qīng Dynasty, Tāng's family moved to Běijīng [[北京]], where Tāng eventually tested into the forerunner of Qīnghuá University 清華大學 and graduated in [[1917]]. In [[1918]], Tāng traveled to the United States. There, he earned his B.A. in philosophy at 漢姆林?? University, before going on to study Sanskrit, Pāli, and philosophy at Harvard. He graduated with his Ph.D. in [[1922]] and returned to China.

Upon his return to China, Tāng took a teaching position at Dōngnán University 東南大學 in Nánjīng [[南京]]. He also taught Pāli at the China Inner Studies Institute [[支那內學院]] headed by Ōuyáng Jiàn [[歐陽漸]]. There, his students included Lǚ Chéng [[呂澂]], Wáng Ēnyáng [[王恩洋]], and Jǐng Chāngjí [[景昌極]]. Tāng briefly took a job at Nánkāi University 南開大學 in Tiānjīn [[天津]], but with the chaos of the Northern Expedition, he returned to Nánjīng and his old university (newly renamed Central University 中央大學) where he took over as Chair of the Literature Department.

In [[1931]], Tāng moved to Běijīng and became a professor of philosophy at Běijīng University 北京大學. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he taught at Southwestern Union University 西南聯合大學, and returned to Běijīng in [[1945]]. He taught Chinese Buddhist history as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley for one year from [[1947]] to [[1948]].

In [[1948]], Tāng became a member of Academia Sinica 中央研究院. The following year, with the establishment of the PRC, he became Vice President of Běijīng University.

Tāng became seriously ill in 1955, and though he recovered, his health was never again as good as it was. He died of heart disease on May 1, 1964.

Tāng's father had been interested in the development of Chinese thought that was based on Lǎozi 老子, Zhuāngzi 莊子, and the ''Yìjīng'' 易經, especially during the medieval period. His father had also been interested in Buddhism and its interaction with these strains of thought during that period. These interests had a profound impact on Tāng and the direction of his own scholarly work. During his lifetime, Tāng was interested in the history of Buddhism, with a particular emphasis on the interactions of Buddhism and Chinese thought during the medieval period. His works were far-ranging, and are still used by scholars today all over the world.
'''Kōngyě 空也 (1885-1946)''' was an important monk, based primarily in Nányuè 南嶽. He was one of the first teachers at the Wǔchāng Buddhist Seminary when it first opened.（Not to be confused with the Japanese, Heian 平安 period Tendai 天台 monk Kūya 空也.)

==Biography==

Once, in his youth, Kōngyě's family had a monk recite a repentance ritual. Kōngyě was able to chant along, and they sent him to be tonsured at Nányuè 南嶽, where he studied under Old Man Mòān [[默庵老人]]. Kōngyě received the full precepts at age 20, after which he began studying the scriptures in greater detail.

In [[1911]], a Tiāntái School 天台宗學校 was started at Zhùshèng Temple [[祝聖寺]] on Nányuè. Kōngyě was asked to lecture there. In [[1918]] and [[1919]], he lectured at Lùshān Ancient Temple [[麓山古寺]] and Kāifú Temple [[開福寺]] in Chángshā [[長沙]].

In [[1922]], Tàixū [[太虛]] asked him to lead the new Wǔchāng Buddhist Seminary [[武昌佛學院]] as ''dūjiǎng'' 都講. He taught there for two years. In [[1924]], he went to Běijīng [[北京]] to be chief lecturer at the Hóngcí Buddhist Seminary [[弘慈佛學院]], returning to Nányuè in [[1926]].

In [[1927]], Táng Shēngzhì [[唐生志]] tried to get Kōngyě to lead the Húnán Buddhicization Association [[湖南佛化會]], which was part of his Buddhicization Movement [[佛化運動]] that sought to train soldiers using Buddhism. Kōngyě refused to participate and fled to Běijīng where he became abbot of Fǎyuán Temple [[法源寺]]. He finally returned to Nányuè in [[1933]] to lecture at the request of the Chángsha Lay Association 長沙居士林.

In [[1934]], he moved to Xiāngtán 湘潭. The following year, he held ordinations at Qīngliáng Temple [[清涼寺]], transmitting the precepts to over one hundred monastics and laity.

Because of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Kōngyě fled to Chóngqìng [[重慶]] in [[1942]]. There he met Xūyún [[虛雲]], before returning to Nányuè around [[1944]].
'''Nénghǎi 能海 (1886-1967)''' was one of the most significant Chinese exponents of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism [[西密]] in 20th century China.

==Biography==

Nénghǎi began his education in a traditional academy. In [[1904]] (Guāngxù 30) he tested into a military school in Sìchuān [[四川]]. After completing his studies he worked in the military for several years. From [[1909]] to [[1910]] he taught at a military school in Yúnnán [[雲南]] before returning to Sìchuān. After the revolution of [[1911]] he was stationed in Chéngdū [[成都]].

In [[1913]], Nénghǎi's friend took him to see the Venerable Fóyuán 佛源 lecture on the Buddhist scriptures. Nénghǎi took refuge under Fóyuán and became a devout Buddhist. The following year, Nénghǎi took leave from the military and traveled to Běijīng [[北京]]. There he met the famous Buddhist layman Zhāng Kèchéng [[張克誠]], had come from the same town as him. Nénghǎi began studying Consciousness-Only 唯識 under Zhāng at Guǎngjì Temple [[廣濟寺]]. In Běijīng he also had the opportunity to study Esoteric Buddhism at the Yōnghé Temple [[雍和宮]]. This experience would have a profound impact on the rest of his life.

In Běijīng, Nénghǎi decided to become a monk, but he had to wait until his wife had had a child. He returned to Sìchuān. In Sìchuān, Nénghǎi attended lectures at a local Buddhist study society. When his wife had a child, Nénghǎi went to Tiānbǎo Temple 天寶寺 in Chóngqìng [[重慶]] where he was tonsured under Fóyuán in [[1924]]. He received full ordination under Guànyī 貫一 at Bǎoguāng Temple 寶光寺 the following year.

After his ordination, Nénghǎi read about the Residing-in-Tibet Dharma Studies Group [[留藏學法團]] organized by Dàyǒng [[大勇]] and he made his mind up to travel to Tibet to study Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism [[西密]]. In February of [[1926]], he and several of his ordination brothers traveled to Kham. There they studied Tibetan language under ?降巴格尊者, who gave Nénghǎi the Tibetan name ?雲登嘉措. After a little over a month Nénghǎi was force to move along after a local official became suspicious of him after he heard about Nénghǎi's military background.

Nénghǎi went onward, and studied with ?雜哇 Geshe. In October of [[1926]], he heard about the death of his master Fóyuán and began the return trip. On his way back he met Dàyǒng and his group in Kāngdìng County 康定縣. Dàyǒng asked him to stay and continue his studies, and he did. There, the group received instruction in various rites of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as continuing their language studies.

At the beginning of [[1927]], he and Yǒngguāng [[永光]] traveled to another temple and received further instruction and initiation. After getting a letter of introduction to Khangsa Rinpoche in Lhasa, Yǒngguāng and Nénghǎi returned to Chéngdū in the winter of [[1927]] in order to prepare for the trip to Tibet's capital.

They set out on June 20, [[1928]] with a great deal of provisions and two other monks. Along they way they visited Dàyǒng in Garzê 甘孜 province. They battled harsh weather but finally made it to Lhasa on September 20, 1928, three months after they had left Chéngdū. In Lhasa, they met with Khangsa Rinpoche. Nénghǎi became the Rinpoche's disciple and received ''abhiṣeka'' 灌頂 from him, as well as dharma transmission, which made him a 28th-generation lineage holder in Tsongkhapa's line. Nénghǎi returned to Sìchuān in the winter of [[1932]] to secure more funds, but came back to Lhasa. He formally returned to Sìchuān in [[1933]].

After his return, he traveled to various places, including Wǔtáishān [[五台山]], Shànghǎi [[上海]], and Jiāngxī [[江西]]. At these places he lectured on Tibetan scriptures and performed ceremonies. When the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out in [[1937]], he took his disciples from Wǔtáishān and returned to Sìchuān.

MORE TO BE ADDED HERE

After the Red Guards attacked Wǔtáishān in 1966, the temples were dismantled, but Nénghǎi remained. He died in meditation on February 9, 1967.
== Sū Mànshū 蘇曼殊 (1884-1918) ==

''Note: Not to be confused with Mànshūjiēdì'' [[曼殊揭諦]]

An important artist and writer of the late Qing and early Republican periods. Mànshū was also a sometimes monk, and one of the first Chinese Sanskritists of the modern period.

'''Biography'''

Mànshū was the son of a Chinese businessman and a Japanese woman from Yokohama. With the outbreak of the First Sino-Japanese War in [[1895]], Mànshū returned with his father to his father's ancestral home in Guǎngdōng [[廣東]]. Because he was the son of a foreigner, Mànshū was neglected by his family, so his father sent him to Hong Kong where he studied English under a Spanish pastor.

Four years later his father's family suffered financial setbacks, and Mànshū and his mother had to return to Yokohama. There he enrolled in school with the help of other Chinese kin, Mr. Lín 林, who supported him until [[1902]]. Mànshū was able to continue his schooling after 1902 with the support of a charitable organization. While in school he joined various revolutionary youth groups, participating in an anti-Russian drill squad. During this time he became acquainted with Fèng Zìyóu 馮自由 who connected him with Chén Shǎobái 陳少白 in Hong Kong.

After arriving in Hong Kong, Mànshū was tonsured under Zànchū 贊初 at Huìlóng Temple 慧龍寺. Though he technically remained a monk all his life, it is well known that Mànshū ate meat, drank alcohol, and was otherwise not entirely diligent about keeping the precepts.

[[File:Su_Manshu2.jpg|left|Sū Mànshū as a student]]After ordination, Mànshū went to Shànghǎi [[上海]] for a period, during which time he wrote several essays for local newspapers. With the help of his former English teacher, Mànshū traveled to Bangkok, where he studied Sanskrit, then traveled to Sri Lanka to continue his studies before returning to Shànghǎi. From there, he traveled to Hángzhōu's [[杭州]] Língyǐn Temple [[靈隱寺]], where he began working on a Sanskrit dictionary. From [[1905]] to [[1907]] he taught at a number of different schools in Nánjīng [[南京]] and Chángshā [[長沙]]. In [[1907]], he returned to Japan, where he lived with Zhāng Tàiyán [[章太炎]]. During this period he completed a number of his major paintings.

In [[1908]], Mànshū accepted the invitation of Yáng Wénhuì [[楊文會]] and taught English at the latter's newly-opened Jetavana Monastery [[祇洹精舍]] in Nánjīng, but because of illness Mànshū was forced to leave this position after only one term. After recovering, he served as a translator for Japan's Sanskrit Society 梵文會, traveling to Singapore and India.

After the founding of the Republic, Mànshū traveled around in Japan and China's Jiāngnán [[江南]] region. In Shànghǎi, he was a member of the Southern Society 南社, and became friends with Liǔ Yàzǐ 柳亞子 and Lǐ Shūtóng 李叔同 (who later became the famous Vinaya master Hóngyī [[弘一]]).

Mànshū became very ill in Shànghǎi during the summer of [[1917]]. He passed away the following spring.
'''Conventions'''
* ''Pīnyīn'' 拼音, including tone markings, should be included for all Chinese terms. For the correct placement of tone markings, follow these rules (for full rules on writing ''pīnyīn'', see this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin page] on Wikipedia):
** If there is an "A" or an "E", that letter takes the tone mark. (E.g. Bèihǎi yuán 北海園)
** If the vowel cluster is "OU", the "O" takes the mark. (E.g. dòu 豆, Ōuyáng 歐陽)
** In all other cases, the mark falls on the final vowel. (E.g. Xióng 熊, duō 多)
* The syllables of monastic and other disyllabic names should not be separated. E.g. 印順 is Yìnshùn, not Yìn Shùn.
* Temple Names are rendered in the following manner: Guānyīn Temple 觀音寺.
** If the temple name is in the form "XX古寺", then the name should be given as "XX Ancient Temple".
** For XX講寺, use "XX Lecture Temple".
* 唯識 is translated as "Consciousness-Only", 法相 as "Dharmalakṣaṇa". 法相唯識 is translated as "Dharmalakṣaṇa and Consciousness-Only".
* All years between 1850 and 1950 should be hyperlinked (like this <nowiki>[[1XXX]]</nowiki> ).
* The [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php#Usage Cite] extension has been installed, please use it for footnotes in articles. See the linked page or the [[戴季陶]] article for examples of usage.
'''Note that the "make a map" and "Editor's map" functions do not work in this version of MediaWiki'''.
* If there are no notes for the article, then the '''notes''' section can be omitted, but don't forget to add one if you add a reference to an article
* Use bullet points to separate references cited at the end of the article

== The Invasion of Jinshan: Dànào Jīnshān 大鬧金山 ==

In January of [[1912]], Rénshān [[仁山]] went to Nanjing to petition the government to change Jīnshān Monastery [[金山寺]] into a modern monastic school 僧學堂. In Nánjīng [[南京]], he met with Tàixū [[太虛]], who had come to Nánjing to work on setting up an Association for the Advancement of Buddhism [[佛教協進會]]. Tàixū was working out of Pílú Temple [[毘盧寺]].

Rénshān and Tàixū joined forces and went to Jīnshān together. There, they stayed at Guānyīn Pavilion [[觀音閣]] (located on Jīnshān 金山), where Rénshān had taken tonsure. A conference was held at the principal monastery on Jīnshan, Jiāngtián Temple [[江天寺]], and the two announced to an audience of two to three-hundred monks and four hundred lay people that they planned to use the Monastery's resources to run the new school. This met with fierce opposition from the officers of the monastery, including the abbot, Qīngshú [[青权]] and the guest prefect, Shuāngtíng [[霜亭]]. The reformers won, and the next day they began going over the monastery's accounts and drawing up plans for the new school.

The officers did not back down, and in mid-February they led a group of workmen in storming the new School's headquarters. Rénshān and others were injured. Ultimately, although the former officers were sentenced to prison terms after Rénshān appealed to the authorities, the school did not materialize. Tàixū's reputation a reformer was, in large part, made by this incident. The results of which were not good for him. Somewhat disgraced, he retreated from the public scene for a number of years after this.

The title of this affair alludes to the 52nd chapter of the ''Journey to the West'', which is titled: 悟空大鬧金山兜洞　如來暗示主人公
