Inner Mongolia (Nèi ménggǔ 內蒙古) is a province in north China. During the Qīng dynasty, both it and Mongolia proper were considered part of China, but after the Republic of China was established, most of this territory gained independence with the help of the Soviet Union. What remained was divided into various territories that included Rèhé 熱河 (Jehol), Cháhā'ěr 察哈爾, and Suíyuǎn 绥遠 provinces, as well as parts of Hēilóngjiāng 黑龍江, Fèngtiān 奉天, Gānsù 甘肅 and Níngxià 寧夏.

During the Sino-Japanese War Inner Mongolia came under the protection of Japanese-sponsored Manzhouguo. In 1947 it became the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region 內蒙古自治區.
