This periodical began after the Shanghai World Lay Buddhist Association 上海世界佛教居士林 split in 1922 into the World Lay Buddhist Association, and the Shanghai Buddhist Pure Karma Society 上海佛教淨業社. The magazine was quarterly at first, but then became irregular. When it started, it published around 10,000 copies per run.
