Shànghǎi World Buddhist Lay Association: Shànghǎi shìjiè fójiào jūshì lín 上海世界佛教居士林

The organization was formed by a group of prominent Shanghainese Buddhists and businessmen in 1918. Owing to a disagreement among its members over the proper purpose of the group, it split in 1922 into the World Lay Buddhist Association 世界佛教居士林 and the Shànghǎi Buddhist Pure Karma Society 上海佛教淨業社. Even after the split there continued to be a great deal of overlap in the membership of the two groups.
