Míngshān was ordained in 1934 and tested into the Jiāoshān Buddhist Seminary 焦山佛學院.
He became a disciple of Tàixū 太虛 and was a student at the World Buddhist Institute 世界佛學苑 in Wuchang under Fǎfǎng 法舫.
In 1947, Tàixū invited him to head the Jiāoshan Buddhist Seminary.
