No problem, these were my first periodical entries so I'm still getting the hang of them. As I do research for the JCR submission I'll try to grab scans of the periodicals. I usually photocopy the first page anyway to grab the publication info. | No problem, these were my first periodical entries so I'm still getting the hang of them. It would be a lot of work, and thus probably a long-term project, but what do you think about having a scanned image of a title page for each periodical? I probably have 6 or 7 just from scanning or photocopying articles recently.
No word from Simon yet on the search index. I'm working on a new draft front page for the site, it's on my user page if you want to add to it.
--Greg 02:37, 31 May 2009 (CST)
Excellent idea re: putting messages at the top. Don't worry about the search results: the index only updates once an hour. If it continues not to display results for more than an hour after the creation of the page, then we'll have to look into it.
I think the Nanjing-style pages could be a useful portal to looking at different sites and institutions in a given city or area. We'll see. Nothing lost if we discontinue them. Pages on temples that were important during the period are crucial though.
I just added a PDF scan of the intro to a book by Ouyang Jian. We can upload PDF materials and link to them from articles now. We'll just have to ensure that they're out of copyright.
June 15th it is then. I have a big list of biographical articles on my user page, feel free to grab one and write it up if you feel inclined.
--Greg 05:57, 29 May 2009 (CST)
PS - yes, there's a problem with the search index. It's possible that it has stopped being updated. I'll have Simon check it out.

Re: search engine ignoring pinyin tone marks: I'll check it out today.
--Greg 01:08, 21 May 2009 (CST)
I think the Lucene [1] search engine is what we need. From the README:
"articles are parsed for basic wiki syntax and are stripped of accents" [2]
I'll contact Simon and see if he can get this installed for us.

#REDIRECT[[page]]where "page" is the name of the target of the redirect. I think it has to be on the first line, any other content will be ignored. To sign a page, just enter two dashes and four tildes
--~~~~or click the second button from the right about the editing window.

Check out my user page for an example of a comprehensive page index. The lists are supposed to be collapsible but that's not working yet. I contacted Simon re: search engine. Great work btw.
PS: When do you want to pause on adding new pages and do a comprehensive edit before making a public announcement about the site? I think a threshold of 100 content pages is a good spot to look back. Also, before we open up for new users we should put together a constitution of sorts to guide future questions and disputes.
--Greg 23:14, 21 May 2009 (CST)
Simon's going to check out the search engine. It's not perfect but it should be better than the default. By the way there's another problem with the pinyin converter; it can't seem to convert a u with an umlaut over it.
--Greg 23:03, 22 May 2009 (CST)
I added a box under the edit box to add pinyin vowels with tone marks. Let me know if you spot any errors. I can put just about anything in that box, if you think there are other special characters that should be included, let me know.
--Greg 05:18, 23 May 2009 (CST)
I added an Article Index that collects all articles that have been categorized into our six main categories. I'm trying to figure out how best to format the main page of the site. Any ideas? I tried to find info on 會覺 but can't find anything substantial on him.
Also, Dharma Drum has an online spreadsheet with info on the MFQ and MFQB, listing the contents of each volume in some detail. Should I find out about incorporating that data into the wiki?

Ok, I drafted up a policy statement, it's on my user page. Could you look it over?
--Greg 23:22, 23 May 2009 (CST)
Simon installed the Lucene extension, the search engine works a bit better now. It will return the right sort of results for pinyin terms without tone marks. It has some trouble searching within long strings of Chinese, however. I might set up a custom Google search as an option in the meantime.
Do you want to put together a list of articles that should be drafted before we do our first editing sweep?
--Greg 08:27, 26 May 2009 (CST)
Don't get burnt out! We've got tons of time. Put it aside for a bit, there's no rush. If we get the editing done by the end of the summer that would be great.
--Greg 09:03, 26 May 2009 (CST)
Sounds great! For my own part, I just added a line of Sanskrit diacritics to the special character input table. I'll work on some of the other style and design stuff around the site, maybe put up some more articles if I think of anything that should be included. If we started editing around June 15th would that be too early? I'd be back in the city then after visiting the farm.
--Greg 22:58, 27 May 2009 (CST)
I tried making a page for 南京 as a geographical entry. What do you think? Could be useful especially if we can make a custom map for places mentioned in the articles.
