This Academy began in 1918 as the Guānzōng Research Society [[觀宗研究社]]. Its name was changed, probably around 1928 when the ''Periodical of the Dharma Propagation Society'' [[弘法社刊]] began publication. It was based at Guānzōng Temple [[觀宗寺]] in Níngbō 寧波 and was associated with Dìxián [[諦閑]], who was the primary teacher there until his death in 1932.
