Owing to a disagreement among its members over the proper purpose of the group, it split in [[1922]] into the World Lay Buddhist Association [[世界佛教居士林]] and the Shànghǎi Buddhist Pure Karma Society [[上海佛教淨業社]]. Even after the split there continued to be a great deal of overlap in the membership of the two groups.
