It was founded in May [[1913]] by Dàojiē [[道階]] and others at Fǎyuán Temple 法源寺 as an attempt to unify and organize all Buddhist temples in China into a single, national association. It became defunct some time during the political disorder that followed Yuán Shìkǎi 袁世凱 proclaiming himself emperor in [[1915]].<br />
