今日の著述家が自己の新著の社會より好評を傳せんと欲よるには、先づ其の卷頭に於て、著者自身の筆により、其の價值を說き立て置かんこと、最も必要なり。無論著述を世に公にせんと欲すろものは、初めより這般の自負心あるべき筈のものならん。然れとも。余は從來未だ自ら斯くまでの自負心と滿足とを以て、自己の著述を世に發表し得たることあらず、今本書に於てち亦實に□<ref>The original character is unclear</ref>の感深し。

但し現今にありては、支那佛教史の研究は、比較的困難なり。蓋し在來組織的の支那佛教史と稱すべきもの皆無なるがため、最も複雜なる史上の事實と、教理の發達とを按徘して、之に順序を與ふろことの。余葷の如さ歷史に通せぎろものに取りては、殆んと暗中に物を探るの感なきを得ざればなり。これ余が本書の不完全を世の學者に訴へて、其の是正を仰がんとするの念切なる所以なり。

元來、余は前著『印度佛教史綱』に對し、之と雙卷れらしめんがれめ、書肆の需めによりて本書に筆を染めれりしも、既に兩三章を草し終るに、及び、當今學者の支那佛教史を要求するも、の潮く多からんとするの傾向あり、而して從來之に應ずべき書の絕無なることを思ふに至り、終に豫期よりも多少詳細なるものを出すの、或は學界に利益あらんことを見乃ち中途稿を改めて以て本書を成すに至りしなり。

既にこれまで範を取ろべき先覺の典籍なし、隨ひて研究の結果、史上の事實、或は漠然傳說し來りし所と齟齬し、或は頗る疑を存すべきもの尠からざすを發見することあり、斯くの如きは、時に獨斷に過ぎ、大膽の笑を免れざるものあるべしと雖、敢て自ら余が所見を記述することを避けず、これ誠みに、揭げて以て世の學者の叱正を受けんことを希望するが為めなり。

余が本書を出版せんことを公言せしは、既に昨年にあり。而して遷延今日に及びしは。實に余が俗務繁劇にして、か丶<ref>A dot てん?　or slash, meaning is unclear.</ref>る事業に力を致すの閑甚だ多からざろによる、余が現時の多忙なら生活を察知せらる丶<ref>Slash as above.</ref>讀書は、余がために深く其の違約の罪を詰責せられざることを墾望す。

本書の書名につきて、或は單に支那佛教史と命することの、世間向きに宜しきことを告くるものなきにあらざりしも、余が此の小著は、單に支那佛教史研究の最初に着手せられたるもの丶<ref>Slash as above.</ref>一として。少かの名譽を負ふべきものにして、未だ支那佛教史と稱する、大なる名稱に副ふの價值あるものにあらず。其の眞の支那佛教史の完成の如きは、之を後賢に囑望せざるを得ざる也。
