Biography

Kāng was born in Líntóng county 臨潼縣, Shǎnxī 陝西 in 1880. He went to a private home school and the provincial high school before going to Běijīng in 1909 where he attended the Imperial Capital University 京師大學堂. Caught up in the revolutionary movement of the time, in 1911 he returned to Shǎnxī and after the Republican revolution worked for the local military government. After Yuán Shìkǎi 袁世凱 rose to power, Kāng felt uneasy in his post and he left, visiting Běijīng and Shànghǎi 上海 where he edited Guómín zázhì 國民雜誌 (National Magazine) and later Xīn Qīngnián 新青年 (New Youth), but his publications were shut down due to his criticisms of the Běiyáng government. In 1921 Yìnguāng 印光 who, like Kāng, was also originally from Shǎnxī, came to Shànghǎi, and Kāng visited him several times, leading to his formally taking refuge under the monk.

Later Kāng returned to Shǎnxī where he and a group of lay Buddhists established the Fóhuà shè 佛化社 (Buddhist Society), which spawned a number of groups involving scripture recitation, youth activities, and a women's association.
