Wǔtái Shān 五台山

This mountain is believed to be the home of Mañjuśri Bodhisattva 文殊菩薩, making it one of the Four Famous (Buddhist) Mountains 四大名山 of China and one of that country's most important pilgrimage sites. Home to many temples, it has been and remains important for followers of both Tibetan and Hàn Buddhisms. it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. There are currently nearly 50 temples on and around the mountain, major ones are listed below.

Important Buddhist Sites

• Nánchán sì 南禪寺
• Púsà dǐng 菩薩頂
• Shūxiàng sì 殊像寺
• Tǎyuàn sì 塔院寺
• Xiǎntōng sì 顯通寺

Notable Residents and Students

• Xūyún 虛雲
• Dorjé Chöpa 多杰覺拔 visited here five times in the early 20th century
• Láiguǒ 來果 (1908)
• The Living Buddha of Jīnshān 金山活佛 (prior to 1917)
• Fǎzūn 法尊 was tonsured here in 1920
• Dàyǒng 大勇 (1920 - 1921)
• Yīngcí 應慈 lectured here in the 1930s
• Nénghǎi 能海 was a long term resident of the mountain.
  • He lived there in the mid 1930s, and again from the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War until his death in 1967.
• Hú Zǐhù 胡子笏 (1934? - 1941?)

Other Notes

• Bái Pǔrén 白普仁 personally met Mañjuśri 文殊 here, and this helped Bái become famous in Mongolia. This probably occurred in the first decade and a half of the 20th century.
